The most common problem with mufflers is that they rust over time. Rust is created on the muffler by water that collects inside the exhaust system. This water then turns into condensation because the system does not get hot enough for it to burn off. Other factors that produce rust include: salt, snow, and rain.

Other common problems with the car’s muffler are holes or loose parts in the exhaust system. These can happen due to the vehicle hitting a pothole, or rock is kicked up from underneath the vehicle creating a crack in the muffler.

Signs of a Muffler Problem

One of the most obvious signs your muffler needs to be looked at is the vehicle is very loud while it is running. If this happens, take your vehicle to a mechanic right away.

A muffler comes standard on all vehicles, but you do have the option of upgrading to an aftermarket muffler if you want your car to stand out. Single Exhaust vs. Dual Exhaust

The single exhaust system has one muffler, which is what you see on most vehicles. Most automobiles do not need a second exhaust system, therefore, no need for a second muffler. Dual exhausts have two mufflers and are normally used for high-performance cars.

The muffler is an important part of your exhaust system. It keeps your vehicle quiet while routing exhaust fumes away from the cabin of the car. It is important to have your muffler in proper working order and to watch for any signs of common muffler problems.
